Puella Magi Madoka Magica OC Costumes

Wow, a non-SMOCT drawing! Don't count on it being like this for a while though, I have a few comics I want to do still.

Anyway, I started listening to this song called "Magia" by Kalafina a while ago, and thought that it was epic so I went to see what anime it was from. Turns out it was from something called Puella Magi Madoka Magica, or Mahou Shojo Madoka Magica in Japan. I started watching it, and absolutely fell in love! Not only is the animation beautiful, but the story is absolutely incredible! And the score is just freaking awesome (I've had Magia on repeat for the past four days no. No joke!). Check it out if you get a chance! I love the costume design as well, so it inspired me to design my own trio of magical girls! ... Well sorta, its more what I imagine what two of my friends and I would look like if we became magical girls/puella magi

Wish: To be able to defend the ones I love.

I wanted to do something armor/knight based, so I actually came up with the costume before I came up with the wish. Originally, it was supposed to be with a sword and shield, but I decided that was almost too stereotypical (plus Juliana, the middle girl, was originally going to have a claymore, so that'd be too many swords), so I looked back to the anime for an idea. I loved how Kyoko's spear could extend, so I borrowed that idea, but made it a double-ended spear. That's when I decided to have defensive/barrier magic associated with this particular costume; the separated segments of the spear could be used to create almost a wall of links, almost like a fence. ... well, that's how it works in my brain anyway XD

Middle: Juliana
Wish: To be the best artist in the world.

This is by far my favorite of the three costumes. I kinda went a little crazy with the design honestly I had to actually choose a wish for , because she couldn't choose one! I figured that since art is part illusion (the illusion of depth), she should have illusion magic. That ended up playing into her costume design, with the optical illusion-inducing swirls. Coupled with her weapon being a paintbrush/pen (have you noticed I like double-sided weapons? ), I gave her improvisation magic as well. Her weapon works like the paintbrush from Okami in my head, meaning whatever she draws can "come to life". Really, it's just an illusion as she sneaks up on her enemies and stabs them with the "pen" side of her weapon.

Wish: To have cat ears and a tail

Claire was kinda thrown in there last minute, so her design isn' as concrete/elaborate as I would have liked, but I still like it I figured she'd wish for something cute, and the cat ears and a tail are something she wished she had for a while now, so it made sense to make her a cat girl. But, I couldn't figure out how to translate that into her costume. I didn't want to make it too close to the traditional cat girl costumes, so I ended up basing it more after her personality: active and upbeat. For her weapons, I figured that claws would be the most fitting. I didn't show them off quite as well as I'd hoped, but it works for what it is As for what kind of magic she had, that stumped me too until I realized "wait, Cat Girls are adorable!", so I gave her charm magic. And since there's the whole "cat's always land on their feet" thing, I thought that gravity magic would work for her too.
