Maeve weaved through the ballroom, her eyes soaking up the scenery and the costumes. Everyone had really gone all out for this! She felt a pang of jealousy; the sheer artistry of some of the dresses made her own feel a bit... plain.

Pssh, our costume's better! Don't get so googly-eyed!

Oh shut it, yeh know as well as I do tha' Ter did most o' th' work on our design! We jus' finished sewin' the bloody thing!

She continued walking, dodging some of the dancing couples (wow, there really was a shortage of men, wasn't there?), and chatting idly with a few as she searched for her friends. Where could they be?

Why don't you just call them with that fancy watch-thing Linaya gave you?

Um... Cos it's back'n our room?

She could feel Aine's eye-roll. Well it DID clash with her outfit! Oh God, I'm startin' t' sound like Niamh... Which made her wonder... How was her family doing? It'd been a few months since she'd come to the Village in the first place, and she'd yet to hear a word from them. Even though she sent half of her earnings back home every week, she should have at least gotten a “thank you” from them... right? And what about the gifts that she'd sent Siobhán? Surely her best friend would say SOMETHING at least!

Are they... Are they glad tha' I'm gone?

Her chest began to grow tight. No, that couldn't be it! Maybe Chaska just messed up and there was a delay in sending everything home! There's no way that they'd just be ignoring her like that!

...Right?

Two hands suddenly gripped her shoulders, spinning her around. She lost her balance and fell forward, but was stopped from hitting the ground when her face landed on something soft-- Or rather, two round, soft things...

“Maevie! There ya are!” Algieba cried happily, pulling Maeve even closer and further burying the poor girl's face into her melons.

“Al-- canff-- breaff--” Al eased up on her hug, allowing Maeve to come up for air. She grinned and returned the hug, then pushed herself back so she could hug Bellatrix as well, who accompanied the now-even-more-lion-like woman as usual.

“Wow, the two o' yeh look absolutely boss!!”

“Thanks, same with you! I love the glow effect, how'd you do it?” Bell grinned, sipping from her drink.

“Ter magicked some crystals from th' gardens fer me! She said somethin' about it 'reflectin' me aura' or somethin' loike tha, I dunno. I really owe 'er fer doin' this fer me.” She examined Bell's costume again. It sure was... Risque, to say the least. “Hey Bell, what're yeh s'posed t' be anyway?” She grinned and posed for Maeve, lacing an arm around Al's waist.

“A lion-tamer, can't you tell!” Al looked back at her and winked.

“I'd like to see ya try, hun!”

“I'm sure something can be arranged. Say Maeve, want to take a closer look?” Maeve blinked.

“Eh? Wot d'yeh--” The next thing she knew, Bell had snaked an arm around her waist and pulled her close, so her face was once again buried Bell's boobs. “GODDAMNIT BELL LEMME GO!!!” Her angry shout attracted quite a bit of attention. Some laughed at her predicament while others just shook their heads. She pushed herself free and turned to storm off, only for Bell to grab her long braid. Her head jerked back as pain shot up her scalp. “OW!! Tha's ATTACHED, yeh know!!!” Bell instantly flushed and let go.

“Oh god, sorry! I thought it was just a hair ornament you always wore! I was going to say that you could be my pet since you came with a leash but, well... Yeah, sorry!” Maeve sighed and rubbed her head, then playfully punched her friend in the arm.

“It's alroit, inn't th' first time, inn't th' last. But I'm not yer pet, alroit?” Al laughed and gently rubbed the spot where Maeve's braid met her head.

“Don't worry hun, I'll make sure she stays in line.”

“Thanks Al. Hey, I'm goin' t' find th' others. I'll see yeh latah!” She waved to the duo and headed toward the staircase that led to what appeared to be the dining area. At the landing before the stairs split in two directions, an orchestra played a gentle waltz. But, in the corners she noticed a few speakers and a microphone set up, probably for a few announcements. An idea wormed its way into her mind-- maybe she could “commandeer” the stage for a bit and then Serenity's Sirens could perform!!

Ooh, that sounds like fun! I'm sure you could try and rope Linaya into getting things set up for you!

Maybe! But we still need our instruments an' all...

A gentle whooshing sound caught her attention. She turned and saw Seraphina approaching her, her trademark half-smile on her lips. Maeve hastily dipped into a curtsey before her. Wow, how's she make sure tha' cape don' rip?!

“Ah, Princess Seraphina!”

“Hello Aine. Are you enjoying the Masquerade?” Maeve tried her best not to wince as Seraphina used the wrong name. Well, it WAS her senshi name...

“Yes, very much! Actually, I was wondrin' somethin'?”

“You would like to perform with your band here, I assume?” What was she, a mind reader?! Seraphina laughed at Maeve's shocked expression. “Princess Venia told me about your 'Serenity's Sirens' just the other day. She speaks very highly of you all! Well...” Maeve held her breath. “I suppose I could look the other way if you just happened to have your instruments and took to the stage in about, let's see here, twenty minutes or so?” She winked conspiratorially at the Irish girl. Maeve resisted the urge to outright hug the woman.

“Th-thank yeh, Princess Seraphina!”

“For what?” With a full smile this time, Seraphina glided off. Maeve practically jumped with joy. Yes! This would be their chance to really get their name out there!

“Roit, now I've got t' find Kath, Amie, an' Ter an' let them know! An' I've got t' decide th' set list...” She wandered off in search of her friends, her mind churning. The orchestra had for the most part been playing slower songs, so it'd be a nice change to kick things up a notch! They'd have to start with “Siren's Call”-- it was their opener, after all-- but then what? Maybe “Magia”, since it was a Japanese song, and “Dark Chest of Wonders” to show off Teruko's range and Bell's guitar skills? Then “The Howling”? No, much to dark given the situation. “Key of the Twilight” would work, though. And then--

There's Teruko! Wait, is she--

Maeve stopped mid-stride, finding the woman she considered to be one of her best friends here in the Village. But, something was wrong. She took a step closer and saw it.

Teruko was crying.

Maeve instantly walked straight over to Teruko and gently put a hand on her shoulder, startling her.

“Wh-- Oh, hello Maeve.” She glanced briefly at Maeve then turned her focus to the ground, fiddling with the ribbon of her mask with trembling fingers. “Er, sorry, something in my eye--” Teruko turned even further from the girl, removing her mask and swiping at the tears rolling down her cheeks.

“Yeh, an' I'm the bloody Queen o' Sheba. Wot's wrong, Ter?”

“No, really, it's nothing.” But her sad blue eyes told a different story. She followed Teruko's glance to a man in a white tuxedo shirt approaching a woman in a bright blue dress and matching hair ribbon. Roit, he's tha' newcomer Bell'd mentioned... Is he-- She looked more closely at Teruko.

He totally led her on!!! How DARE he, especially if his focus is on another woman!! Oooooh let me take control so I can castrate him!!!!!

Maeve was tempted to do just that, but that'd be a bit messy... But still...

No Aine, it'll have t' wait.

Ugh, FINE.

With that, she felt Aine's presence diminish almost completely. Sure, she sometimes sulked, but never to that extent. But Maeve pushed that thought from her mind. There was still the problem at hand; someone had made her friend cry!!

“Tha' bastard led yeh on, didn't he?” Now Teruko met Maeve's eyes.

“What? N-no, it's not like that, it's--”

“He made yeh cry, Ter! No one makes me friends cry!! I'll kill him!!” Maeve turned to storm off, but Teruko clung to her arm.

“No, please don't make a scene! It's alright Maeve, really!” The Irish girl sighed and relaxed slightly, enough for Teruko to let go of her arm. The older girl struggled to replace her mask, her hands in absolute tremors at this point. “I-I think I'm just going to go back to my room. I've had a nice enough night.” She turned to leave, but Maeve caught her hand first.

“Wait.” Teruko hesitated, her body quivering as she kept her back toward the younger girl. Why was Maeve holding her back? She only wanted to get away from this place, away from the memories that poisoned her thoughts!

“If yeh leave now, think about all th' things yeh'll miss. So some tosser made yeh upset, are yeh goin' t' run away an' leave yer friends behind here?” A strange energy started to flow through Maeve's body, making her feel more confident than she'd ever been in recent memory. She released Teruko's hand, somehow knowing that her friend wouldn't run off. The crystals that had been bespelled to reflect her aura surged with the energy, changing from a pale mint color to a breathtaking emerald. “Do yeh really want that, to go on not knowing what yeh may have missed? To end up regretting things yeh should have done?”

Teruko turned, confused by Maeve's suddenly proper diction. She gasped as she looked at the girl who now stood before her. Her hair had lightened from its normal muddy brown to the color of a lion's mane, and kindness spoke through her now sky-blue eyes. Even her posture had changed, showing a sudden maturity.

Was this still Maeve? Teruko listened to the chiming of the crystals in Maeve's dress, hearing that their music sounded the same as when the two of them had put the spell on them. Yes, she decided, it was still her, but this is what she would be without Aine's presence in her body. Or, with her soul overpowering the Fae's spirit. Maeve smiled gently at Teruko, and held out a hand to her, palm up.

“Come dance with me, Teruko.” She hesitated, then placed her own hand in Maeve's palm. She felt the calming energy that flowed through her friend, curling like twining vines and gently winding their way through Teruko's fingers. She felt herself grow calmer, and for what felt like the first time in ages, smiled. Maeve gracefully led her to the dance floor and proceeded to her through a waltz with surprising skill. The emerald glow slowly subsided into its previous color as Maeve regained her normal appearance, but her easy smile never left her face. As she dipped Teruko, she squeezed her friend's hand.

“See Ter? Yeh don' have t' run. Jus' enjoy th' night with yer friends!” Teruko smiled and nodded, finding herself placed upright once again as the music ended. Maeve grinned and pulled her into a hug. She rested her face close to the girl's ear.

“Yer an amazin' person, Teruko. Don' ever let anyone tell yeh differently.” Teruko blushed and returned the hug, her eyes starting to tear up once more. But, this time, they were tears of happiness, not of pain.

“Thank you Maeve. Really, thank you. I'm so lucky to have you as a friend.” Maeve gently kissed her cheek then pulled back, glancing at a clock on a nearby column.

“Of course! Oh an' we're performin' in ten minutes, so be ready!” She winked and disappeared into the crowd in search of the other band members.

“Don't worry, I will-- wait, WHAT?!”
So, remember how I was going to do a comic for this? I'm really REALLY sorry, but real life has intervened once again and I had to end up doing a writing entry if I wanted to get this in on time!!! TT_TT The comic is nearly finished, too but I just can't get it done the way I wanted it to in the time I have... So, have a writing piece with ALL OF THE FEELZ!!

I'll get a proper setlist of Serenity's Sirens up sometime, but I'd love some ideas on what to put in there! They're mostly a rock band but they do have a bit of variety in their music! ;)

For the record, Niamh (mentioned) is one of Maeve's siblings.

(Awww Maeve, you're starting to fall for Teruko, aren't you? XD)
